# Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT)
Tags: #psychology #hiring #education
A variant of [[social cognitive theory (sct)]] which models and explains three mechanisms which promote career exploration and attainment: [^social1996]
- Self efficacy
- Outcome expectations
- Performance goals
Specifically, the theory suggests that people are likely to be interested in activities which may advance their careers, and likely to overcome setbacks, when they consider themselves competent and expect they have a chance at a positive outcome. (Conversely, and perhaps obviously, if people doubt their confidence or think they have no shot at their goals, they are not likely to take action to further their career.) [^unifying1994]
In order to build the confidence and help visualize positive outcomes in order to overcome these setbacks, they need to practice, receive feedback, and set goals on their performance. [^unifying1994]
